i feel in order to solve the problems in the world, america needs to creat like the french a legion where we could send troops to solve problems, without risking our troops in battle, the difference would be that we would get the troops from the area that is in need and help them deal with anything (air support, ect) but they would do the fighting
ex: in africa you sign up africans who want to fight and provide them with training and material support so that they can help save themselfs and their people. tell me what you think?

i would never put this type of operation in the hands of the u.n.
why? darfur come to mind, and lets not forget how the world stood by and let hummm? how many people die in 1994? about a million or so(nobody was able to really count all the bodies so who really knows, could be higher)
my point is that this force needs to be able to act as fast as the situtation demands and without the b.s. that comes with politics which is the u.n's stock in trade

Along this subject;

BBC News:

"The European Union has agreed to establish an anti-piracy security operation off the coast of Somalia.
French Defence Minister Herve Morin said at least eight countries have agreed to take part.
The deal follows the seizure of a ship laden with 33 tanks - a $20m (?11m) ransom is wanted for its release."

Seems like this would be a job for a UN force, EU doesn't want to wait.

Gentlemen,

The value or worth of the UN, like any organization, can only be measured by effectiveness...
Earlier I put forth the idea of a combat arm of the UN...If these people are to be effective, they have to be used as they are intended, namely the true 'last resort', when talking is no longer an option...so, in essence we are all in agreement, just addressing different areas of the same problem...for it is one problem, making a situation better for someone that they, for whatever reason, cannot make better for themselves...
I would love to see something like this, if only because it would give some relief to the US military...one mission less in the mission statement...
What I'm thinking is that a UN CORP is doable, and a less expensive proposition as man might think...the local army, if there is one, would be reinforcements...I have to admit my thoughts are not much on the political...my concern is the guy on the ground, and would have to rely on political masters to understand that sending in the UN CORP means someone is gonna get their butt kicked...I'd like to hear other folks thoughts on this...

BOTH YOU AND DAVE45039 ARE GETTING ME WRONG, WHEN I TALK ABOUT A FORCE, I AM TALKING ABOUT
A REAL FORCE WHICH HAS ALL THE NEEDED EQUIPMENT TO STAND ALONE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE,NOT SOG OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, AND IN DARFUR THIS IS MY POINT THIS FORCE WOULD BE COMPOSED OF THOSE SAME AFRICANS WHO ARE SUFFERING WE WOULD GIVE THEM THEM MEANS TO HELP THEM SELVES WITH OUR SUPPORT, IF THIS MEANS A CIVIL WAR, SO BE IT, IF THIS MEANS WE HELP OVER THROW A GOVERNMENT WHICH IS KILLING ITS OWN PEOPLE, SO BE IT, IF THIS MEANS WE MAKE A STAND SO BE IT, BUT AT NO TIME WILL WE ALLOW PEOPLE TO BE KILLED WHILE WE STAND THERE AND WASTE WORDS AND DO NOTHING

We have many units that deal directly with these issues. Civil Affairs, PSYchological OPerationS, others, as well as SFG(A) groups. They do a good enough job. The question is not have they been formed but will the govt allow them to do the job necessary to make a real change out there? That is political jibber-jabber that halts any real help. When you have an oppressive political regime that deals in death and pain, well you have to eliminate that regime. The UN is an unnatural and unholy alliance that has outlived its usefulness.

The John F. Kennedy Center for Military Assistance at Ft.Bragg...
JFKCMA...sounds like you know your way around the place...
The problem arises when you start major operations...small formations of indigenous troops are fine for someplace like the central highlands of Vietnam or mountain ops in Afghanistan, but how do you apply that to Dafur where there are close to a million civilians that are the schwerepunkt of the entire operation? And the local army are the bad guys?
The U.N. must be given a combined arms corp consisting of an armored division, an air assault division and an mech infantry division. Establishment of an officers academy where all young men and women are given the chance to serve the world as a whole and are given that as a ground belief throughout the course of their training... sworn in as citizens of the world and lose national citizenship, receiving instead a U.N. passport...troops are recruited using the FFL regs...6 year enlistment and 20 year retirement...troops have a U.N. ID until they leave service, then become the passport of their choice...The ability to deploy these troops would lie with a 'Council of Eight' and this council would only meet at the call of a general assembly, leaving the assembly with the power to enforce whatever resolutions are passed.
It goes much deeper but you get the idea...

DeepThinker,
This is exactly what the specialty of the U.S. Special Forces (Green Berets) is. It's called 'force expansion' whereby a team of GB's will go into a potential enemy area/country/region and train, equip, and support the indigents to carry out the assigned mission(s). In the first Iraq war they were there with the Kurds, in Afghanistan they are there with the tribal peoples, in Vietnam it was with the Montagnards. They usually fight alongside their trainees and live with, learn their languages, and in general become part of the 'tribe' until the 'mission' is complete.
