I was passing through St. Marys City in Maryland about 15 years ago (about 50 miles south of Wash DC). Although it was after hours and I was unable to get into the museum, my attention was drawn to a sign on the road which identified two dates for the establishment of one of the founding towns of the United States. It said that the Calverts (a breakaway religion from the Church of England) had established their Charter in England in 1633 and then established St. Marys City in MD in 1634. Obviously, they were seeking religious and personal freedom like many other groups of settlers in the Americas at about the same time. And it could be argued that religious and personal freedom were more important than Government to them (note the dates) and that they were the original mavericks of the Americas because of this. All apologies to John McCain and Sarah Palin! So why did the ultimate Maverick, George Bush, want to punish the various Iraq religious factions (who definitely put religion over Government in my opinion) when he is a product of this type of Philosophy? Well, I guess his religion didn't agree with theirs. I'm not a history scholar, so I can't delve into this any further, but I'll have to trust that Barack Obama will listen to the following: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Nough said.
