My folks taught me that when you do a piece of work, if you're not ready to sign your name to it then you didn't do your best. If you didn't do your best, take no pride in what you've done because you got no reason to be proud of second rate work.
That holds true(at least for me)for almost everything else in life.
Can you take pride in how you treated someone today? Are you able to take pride in how you dealt with the things you must do to keep going every day?
If not, why not?
I don't mean vainglorious bull.
To know that every day you make an honest attempt to live a life that you can take pride in, is to be honest, no solution to problems. But it does make one hold the head a little higher, feel good about who you are and even makes it a little easier to accept the inevitable setbacks.
What have you done today that you can take pride in?
Or, to quote an old TV commercial:
Do you work so well you're proud to sign your name to it.

You're right in that pride can be the downfall of a careless person.
But when I think of pride in self or accomplishment my Granddad and his dad come to mind...
when the union army occupied louisiana they gave many freed slaves land to try and start new lives. Well, we all know that many people later got B.S.'ed out of their property. With luck granddad's folks were able to keep at least part of the land they got,and built a small farm.
some of the sons went west to try and build lives there, some stayed and worked the farm and three went to the army for the 25 bucks a month, sending most of that home. Great Granddad built a home, then a family. Granddad built a road out to the main road to town, then a church because there was no Baptist church for blacks in his corner of Louisiana.
When he buried his wife of 70 or so years it was in the family plot overlooking the land and security he built for his family. He had good reason to be proud.

excellent...!!! pride is an interesting emotion... that can easily be tainted with narcissism, egocentric, selfish behaviour... criminals, felons, racists, ad nauseum, unfortunately take pride in what they do and what they do to get away with the act, and even sign their name to it, gives pride a different facet and twist...
HOWEVER...!!! if the act or contribution is for the benefit of the recipient, then signing your name to it may become a moot point and the 'deed' may be more self-serving than realized... as in 'i did it because it makes ME feel good about myself', brings in the narcissism card...
for example... howard stern(satellite)... with the type of humor and the cast of characters and heightening their impediments brings pride to him... proud of what...??? a paycheck for both sides...??? those who revel in humiliation at the expense of the target is a prideful thing...??? there's satisfaction in that...??? watching glam 'newscasters' rip a victim for their own ratings and contract is a prideful thing...???
not in this corner...

the performer may claim pride in what they do, but the approval ingredient is required to validate the performance...
the artist that creates, puts their name on all that they do does NOT need that approval in the manifestation of self expression other than being in their growing process of developing their techniques in achieving higher levels of creation and interpretive expression...
the parent who brings a new life into existence already has their name on that miracle... signed, sealed and delivered... to look upon what you have done in their growth process and being able to say'YESSS...!!! i done good...' is not only pride and accomplishment but becomes your legacy and potential immortality...

ok... i just set you up...

roll with it (stevie winwood)
