Just wondering...

Obama's father is black and his mother is white.

Obama is referred to as African-American. Only 1/2 the story.
Looking at the other half couldn't he also be referred to as Caucasian?

Reminds me of the time when you were considered black if you had 1/16 black heritage.

Maybe bi-racial is a better word....and then would we refer to McCain as uni-racial...

Wondering in whose/what terms race is determined only from the mother's DNA? I am ignorant and have no info in this area.

What do you mean I drop is 'socially' accepted as black? As opposed to legally? If I have 1 drop of black blood do I start checking THAT box now?

Genetically race is determined from the mother's dna -- Therefore Sen. Obama (genetically) is white with a Kenyan fathe, Tiger Woods is Asian with a Black American father, Haile Berry, Jasmin Guy, etc. I am now drolling. Socially, since slavery, black is defined as 1 drop of black blood in your veins, just the way it is.

Neverdull, here is a very intriguing book that adresses that issue. It's very well written and a extremely good read.

The color of water : a Black man's tribute to his white mother / James McBride.
Published New York : Riverhead Books, 1996.

I had the fortune of hearing the author discuss the book in person.

People also get to self-identify with race. So I would call myself multi-racial b/c I identify with many races from my upbringing with a white/italian dad, black aunt, mexican/black cousins, irish cousins, asian best friend etc.

So Obama identfies himself more as african american most likely because many americans see him as that.

Exactly my thoughts. As a mother of three bi-racial kids I feel left out if they are referred to as "Black". Where is my part of the mix? True the NAACP won't like it if many "black" people are suddenly bi-racial but why buy into the White slave masters ideology to classify someone with a drop of black blood, "black" for the sake of being able to sell that person! Hallo..... it was a white idea to manipulate commerce. So what is wrong with being multi-racial as a category? Race is biologically a figament of the imagination. There are just graduations of different fenotypes, many area's of gray. Come on America, at least aknowledge Barak's Mama who raised him!
