This is one of the few shows I watch..Or I at least see the table of contents.. I missed it this time. They had a special on the "happiest countries". Denmark was #1 .. I was wondering if anyone caught the show and can mention the others countries?

ME...Astute??? Why thank you. **LOL**

I believe this segment of 60 Minutes originally aired last year(2007), so you were viewing a rerun.

The topic was THE HAPPIEST NATIONS IN THE WORLD, and the results of a study based on researchers at Britains University of Leicester.

Through their research, they discovered the countries that were the happiest tend to be healthier, more economically stable(i.e., less impoverished), and have access to a basic quality education.

Based on the research, RANKING 178 countries, the TOP TWELVE HAPPIEST NATIONS ARE:

1. DENMARK
2. SWITZERLAND
3. AUSTRIA
4. ICELAND
5. BAHAMAS
6. FINLAND
7. SWEDEN
8. BHUTAN
9. BRUNEI
10. CANADA
11. IRELAND
12. LUXEMBOURG

The U.S. ranked 23 outside of the top 20, and the U.K. ranked 41, with China(82), India(125), and Russia(167).

Not surprisingly, the African nations didn't rank very high at all, with aids epidemics(and overall poor access to quality health care), the lack of access to a basic education and high poverty rates.

I suppose the question that some may be asking is, why didn't the U.S. rank higher than 23(based on the most recent study)?

My Take On This:

The U.S., unlike the mostly European countries listed above(top 12)is a CAPITALIST NATION. We are surrounded by all manner of media hype(influences) and conditioned by our society to equate prosperity and personal accomplishments with HAPPINESS, in fact many American people define themselves primarily by what they have(i.e., material gains)and what they've accomplished. But the question is, IS THIS REALLY HAPPINESS? And the next question is, What's Happiness?

If our(accomplishments, and material gains) are not true measures of Happiness, then are we really defining ourselves by something that, perhaps the majority of [Americans] have no knowledge or REAL experiences of , ergo...increasing our varied states of UNHAPPINESS?

I realize that Happiness can be quite subjective, but I also realize that there is a general criteria by which this THING called Happiness can be measured.

Maybe I'll discuss this on my next post, or perhaps this should be another blog entirely.

Anyone bold enough to go for it???

Yes, phea [the veteran] you are astute!! Usually I see the show or at least the table of contents.. Or I listen to it on radio (WCBS)if Im busy.. Thats what I was talking about. {Ive always been intrigued with Scandanavia} Thank you!
I agree.. Just because a guy is too material minded and trying to hide problems.. Getting stressed with ulcers, migraines, weak immune system and worrying about the Dow Jones.. Having a shorter life span. Poor health care system here.. Soldiers dieing. Gas going near 5 bucks.. This does not mean the country is happy!?? ( its a cruel joke in the U.S) Thanks..

Click the buttons at the right toward the top. - these are the top 13 at least.

You can also youtube 60 minutes happiest countries and find the show and just watch it again if it had something in there.

I loved Austria when I visited. I would love to live in these countries for a month each.

United States is 23rd
Watch it in its entirety on you tube - 60 Minutes-Happiness. I found quite interesting, the government pays students in Denmark to go to school as apposed to here in the US where students pay! Six weeks paid vacation isn't anything to frown about either (I have been with my company for 24 years and get 5!). I was going back to Alaska after retirement, however may have to reconsider somewhere out of the United States! LOL!!!
