Another post said why get married. Here are my thoughts. Tax benefits, estate planning - leave whatever you want to your spouse without taxation, priority for making medical or financial decisions for your spouse, receive gov't or employer benefits from spouse (bereavement, paternity, maternity leave or insurance), see spouse in intensive care units, death benefits, renew leases in spouse's name, family rates on auto insurance, tuition, and other "family incentives", visiting rights in jail, court rights not to testify against your spouse, and my favorite, if you got this far, right to sue a third person for offenses that interfere with the success of your marriage, such as alienation of affection and criminal conversation (these laws are available in only a few states).

Now on to why the same name: marriage. When you call the same behavior two things under the law, the law makers can change one without changing the other because technically they are separated under the legislation. That would permit separation of rights which could be eliminated for one but not the other, taxation, being the most obvious right to be altered.

So YEAH CALI for legalizing love. As Dave said, everyone should have the right to be miserable. =)

However, I haven't married yet, so I still have hope..

I thought of a reason not to get married (same or opposite sex). The marriage penalty - you loose money on taxes, you loose money on IRA contributions, and you loose money on investment deductions.

plus it costs like $50 to get married for the license fee. (but that's not much compared to the grand it costs to get a divorce)

there was also the question that was raised a while back 'Bloggen-daz - Enagagement Rings For Men...???' where it was realized that in germany it is a custom that men are 'given' engagement rings ...

]quote[if you got this far, right to sue a third person for offenses that interfere with the success of your marriage, such as alienation of affection and criminal conversation (these laws are available in only a few states).]quote[

ahhhhhh, then thar be the crimes of passion.... fun and games in a litigious society... let's negotiate from 1st degree, pass manslaughter and get 5-15w/parole on crime of passion... yabba dabba done...

in the beginning you went to both sets of parents to seek approval, particularly papi-san... then the tribe elders wanted to get their dibs in to nod their approval, then the medicine man needed his cut(literally) to sanction the union... the witch doctor segued into the religious sector who gives more than a nod and takes even more than that in return... you MUST have the blessing/prayers of the governing religion. no religion you say.... CALL THE governing body...!!! JP at your service, also captain of this vessel...hmmmmmm, you want to have the ceremony on the titanic or the andrea doria...ummmmmmm, NO...!!! bad karma....
live in unholy wedlock and you must leave this village and become instant breakfast for the critters that wish to have you for your honeymoon....

there is only one diss to marriage and that's if you roll snake-eyes..... THE DIVORCE...

Quoting jammer2:

Isn't it amazing how the republicans(with the help of the religious right)want to reduce the size of goverment just enough to fit in your bedroom?

maybe it should be called a 'union'..... like in the document that reads, 'we the people...[edit] in order to form a more perfect union'...ohhhhhhhh the preamble to the constitution....

would read We, THE COUPLE, in order to form a more perfect UNION, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution. and each one will share the expenses and do grocery shopping....

I don't think there are any arguments against legalizing and calling gay marriage, marriage.

Since I am looking for a fella, I figure if more people are wearing rings, even if that ring is linked to another fella, easier it is to pick out the single men for me =)
